Since 1879, light bulbs have been used to provide light for our homes and appliances. Now, the range of light bulbs available for use has grown drastically, but the four most common types of lightbulbs are incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, and LED lights. Each bulb has an ideal use based on the color and amount of light they omit, which goes as follows:
- Incandescent. When thinking of a light bulb, the image that comes to mind is most likely an incandescent bulb. Incandescent bulbs provide warm, diffused lighting, perfect for use in lamps and home fixtures for a more relaxed ambiance.
- Halogen. Halogen bulbs are considered the evolution of the classic incandescent bulb, lasting longer but still maintaining that classic light bulb shape and functionality. Similar to incandescent bulbs, halogen bulbs can be used in decorative light fixtures to provide soft, diffused light.
- Fluorescent. Fluorescent light bulbs, when compared to incandescent and halogen light bulbs, emit bright, white light and can be used in a variety of settings. Although they are more energy efficient, these bulbs are harsher and more direct than dimmable, softer bulb styles. Depending on the fixture and bulb shape, fluorescent light bulbs can be used in anything from table lamps to overhead track lights.
- LED. Both long-lasting and energy efficient, LED light bulbs can provide light for almost 25 times the lifespan of a traditional bulb, providing dimmable light and full-powered light in any kind of fixture. Some LED light bulbs, depending on the manufacturer, can be paired with a smartphone app, allowing the user to change their bulb color to any color and tone of their choosing.
