GFCI Outlets
The modern world is incredibly dependent on electronics, and most homeowners in the Chesapeake area may not realize how much electrical power is flowing through their homes at any given time. As the world has grown more reliant on electrical technology, this technology has evolved tremendously. There are many safety features in place with most modern electrical systems that aim to reduce the chances of electrical injuries and control voltage safely.
One of the most important recent developments in electrical technology is the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet. GFCI outlets are advanced pieces of electrical hardware designed to protect electrical circuits while simultaneously preventing electric shock injuries using advanced sensor technology and rapid-response breaker tripping capability.
How Does a GFCI Outlet Work?
Most GFCI outlets contain extremely sensitive sensors inside that can detect any loss of current between the hot wire and the neutral wire inside the outlet. If the GFCI sensor detects even the slightest amount of current loss, the GFCI outlet trips the connected breaker in less than 30 milliseconds, shorter than the time required for an electrical shock to occur. GFCI outlets are also ideal for areas that typically have a higher risk of electrical accidents involving water, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.
“GFCI” is often used interchangeably with Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) technology, but the GFCI version of this safety feature functions at the breaker level. GFCI can potentially protect multiple outlets at the breaker level, but GFI only functions at the individual outlet level. Despite this difference, it is not uncommon for modern electricians to use the two acronyms interchangeably. A professional electrician can help you determine if GFI or GFCI is right for your property.
